Reston Bicycle CluB

Reston Bike Club has a Club Membership with Ride with GPS (RWGPS). This allows the club to offer a RWGPS membership with Premium features to all our members for free - an $80.00 license if you purchased it on your own. You get audio turn-by-turn navigation with the mobile app, off-line maps, estimated time to ride a route based on your riding history, advanced turn notifications, average speed and distance notifications, and PDF maps and custom cue sheets - if you want the paper back-up. There are a lot of tutorial videos on the RWGPS site.

Here is how to get started:

  1. Go to Ride with GPS and sign up for a free account
  2. Send an email to our RWGPS Route Coordinator ( to obtain your RWGPS membership auto-enrollment link. Use the link to automatically register yourself as a member in the RBC Library with Premium features
  3. Download the Ride with GPS App for Apple or Android and log in with your free account credentials. You will see a new item on the main menu for "Club Routes." This will show you the RBC Route library. If you don't see it, close the app and re-open to apply your configuration updates.

Ride with GPS Tips

Go to the RBC RWGPS site and read about our route numbering and naming convention. This will make it easy to find a starting point, route length, and elevation variety you want to ride.

Download the route you want while you are at home and have WiFi access, or download at the starting point over your data connection. It takes about 30 seconds to load a route. Use off-line mode while you are riding the route. This will extend battery run-time. Also, if you hare riding in an area where there is limited cell tower reception, turn off your radio to save even more battery run-time. Do not use Airplane Mode as you still need a GPS satellite signal to navigate. With these power-saving tips, your phone should easily give you 6+ hours of audio turn-by-turn instructions. This is more than enough to ride a Century route.

Pair a heart rate monitor and speed & cadence sensor in the mobile app to record ride data. You can also let the GPS calculate speed and distance. Put your phone in your pocket and use one ear bud to listen to the turn-by-turn instructions. The use of two ear buds is illegal in Virginia.

Listen only to turn-by-turn instruction or add-in average speed and distance updates during the ride. Time yourself on segments. Use segments to measure progress on sections of your favorite route, or compare your ride times with other RBC cyclists. For added safety, use Live Logging to keep your SAG team at home up to date on where you are. With Group Live Logging through the app, you can view the location of other riders in real-time. This is an ideal tool for Ride Leaders on those long rides in the country. Your ride history and ride data are automatically stored at the end of your ride in your personal account.

RBC Ride with GPS routes can also be downloaded on your Garmin, Wahoo, or other bike computer.
