Thursdays: The Lake House
The Reston Bike Club is happy to continue our partnership with our local bike shops: Green Lizard Cycling (Herndon) and The Bike Lane (Reston) for two of the rides in our women's ride series. These rides will start at 6PM and begin and end outside the shop. If you arrive early, please feel free to go into the shop, introduce yourself, browse, and have a drink or snack. Lisa Mackem, Susie Littlejohn, and Karen Palino will lead most of the Herndon rides and provide some cycling tips for new riders. Kelley Westenhoff and Laura Robinson will lead most of the Reston rides and also provide cycling tips for new riders. Other ride leaders are welcome and encouraged, particularly if you have attended a Reston Bike Club ride leader training or if you have other ride leader experience. Please tell the ride leaders if you would like to lead a ride or lead a group within the ride.
The Green Lizard women's rides will range from 18-32 miles, and routes will be posted in advance. Routes will go through Herndon and Ashburn, where the terrain is flat or gently rolling, with 2-3 hills that are more significant than the rest. Riders are encouraged to download the routes or familiarize themselves with the routes in advance, because we no longer use paper cue sheets. Preregistration is required, along with preregistration for other RBC rides. Most of us average approximately a 15-16 mph pace. If you like to ride faster than that, we have had a 17-18mph group in the past. Depending on rider demand, we can re-start that group later this season. We will start with two groups that will each average 15-16mph, and both groups will ride the same route. Both groups will wait for any rider who has technical problems, and Dave Meyer, our usual sweeper and owner of the Green Lizard, can offer technical help. Both groups also will wait for any riders who are caught at traffic lights, and faster hill climbers will wait at the top of significant hills to make sure everyone catches up. We ask that women who sign up for this ride be able to maintain an average pace of 15 mph. The ride leader will ask anyone who falls significantly behind this pace to drop off the ride at a safe location along the WOD. Any dropped rider is welcome to try again another day. Several other RBC rides accommodate paces under 15 mph.
The Bike Lane women's rides will range from 15-20 miles depending on available light, with a very consistent route from week to week, posted in advance. Routes will stay in Reston, where the terrain is flat or gently rolling, with 1-2 hills that are more significant than the rest and with some part at the beginning and end on the W&OD. Riders are encouraged to download the routes to reduce the need for cue sheets. Preregistration is encouraged, along with preregistration for other RBC rides. We do not drop ANY woman EVER. We have 4 ride leaders within our group so can accommodate the needs of all riders.
The Thursday ride meets at the parking lot next to the Lake House at Lake Newport. Lauren Goebel will lead riders on a fun 20 mile loop that includes rolling hills and one short climb. This ride has a sweeper rider to assist riders with mechanical issues or riders struggling to keep up. The ride averages 14-16 mph, depending on the group, but it is a no-drop ride, so no riders will be left behind. Many riders stay after the ride for post-ride libations and pretzels at Lake Anne Brew House.
All of these rides will be held every Monday and Thursday except for holidays, or when the risk of rain is greater than 50% at the ride start. Ride cancellations will be posted on the Women's Ride event page for that week (which is where riders sign up and get the maps and cue sheets) and on the RBC Facebook page.
If you are riding home after any of these rides, use a head and taillight! Taillights are also encouraged during the rides.
